Avance started in a small office on East Main Street in Stamford, with one desk, one phone line, and a waiting room that filled up because people told their cousins. We were not trying to build a firm. We were trying to answer the questions nobody else would sit down and answer — what does this IRS letter mean, why was my refund held, how do I open a business here.
Fifteen years later there are four offices — two in Stamford, one in Norwalk, and a Milford appointment location — and the work has grown with the community it serves. We prepare corporate returns and we help a grandmother get her documents translated for the DMV, sometimes in the same hour. Our team speaks English, Spanish, and Portuguese because that is what our neighbors speak, not because it looks good on a website.
The part we are proudest of is the least glamorous: we are open all year. April ends and we are still here — for the amended return, the audit notice, the FAFSA deadline, the business loan the bank suddenly needs paperwork for. Being findable in August is not a marketing strategy. It is the reason people trust us in February.
